Will small steps assist me achieve larger goals...?

Now we're into another year and the shock of returning to work is over it's time once again to sit back reflect on resolutions for the year ahead. If I'm honest I don't have a great track record at keeping to the resolutions I spend so long over Christmas committing to. In 2011 I spent a lot of time working my own personal development and made a number of small changes to how I work.

This made me think that this year instead of BIG "life changing" resolutions that are very specific I would try something different. So I have picked 4 broad themes that if I can work on that I feel will take me forward in 2012. I picked themes that would take me forward; (a) personally (to get fitter and live a healthier lifestyle), (b) at work (promote a new commercially driven service), (c) socially (to live a more sustainable life), and (d) community focused (raise and gift £1,200 to charity and donate a couple of hours per week of my time).

In addition to these themes I have made one simple resolution, to identify 10 tasks each month that move me forward against my themes. In taking small steps towards my goals over the year I hope to not only stick to my resolutions but make real progress against them.

My task is made easier by me having a vision in my mind of what I would like to achieve. Having reflected on this for a while I wonder how powerful this could be at work. If we could tick off 120 tasks in one year what could we achieve and how far could we move forward towards our objectives.

This is going to be a key message for me in 2012 whilst helping clients move their businesses forward and I might update this post as we progress!
